Study of ACTS 12:1-19

King Herod Agrippa I began persecuting the early Christian church, executing James (Jesus' apostle and John's brother) with a sword. Pleased with the Jewish leaders' reaction, Herod arrested Peter during Passover and imprisoned him, assigning 16 soldiers to guard him. Herod planned to put Peter on trial after Passover. Meanwhile, the church prayed continuously to God for Peter's release.

Key points:

  • James, Jesus' apostle, was executed by Herod.

  • Peter was arrested and imprisoned during Passover.

  • Herod planned to put Peter on trial after Passover.

  • The church prayed fervently for Peter's release.

This sets the stage for Peter's miraculous escape in Acts 12:6-19.
